Guanacaste’s smaller bays tend to have gentler water in the dry season (roughly December to April) than the open surf beaches. Sámara’s reef-sheltered bay and the coves near Playas del Coco are typical choices for swimming and sitting. On the Caribbean, the stretch from Cahuita to Punta Uva has a slower village rhythm, with more rain spread through the year.
| Area | Atmosphere | Getting there | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sámara (Guanacaste) | Small town, wide sheltered bay | About an hour and a half to two hours by road from Liberia airport | Beach is walkable from town; little nightlife |
| Playas del Coco area | Calm bays, boat trips | About 30 minutes from Liberia airport | Busier in high season |
| Cahuita–Punta Uva (Caribbean) | Jungle-backed beaches, village pace | About 4–5 hours from San José by road | Wetter year-round; check sea conditions |
| Tambor and the Gulf of Nicoya | Very quiet, palm-lined lagoons | Ferry from Puntarenas, or a domestic flight | Few services; plan meals |

La Fortuna, beneath Arenal Volcano, is the classic “comfortable base”: many hotels have their own thermal pools, and most tours include pickup. Monteverde is cooler and misty, with cloud-forest reserves a short drive from town. The road up is winding, which some travellers find tiring.
