Read the map first

Zoom in on the hotel’s location before reading reviews. A property on the main road into town, beside a bar strip or next to a construction site will rarely be quiet, whatever the photos suggest.

Questions to ask

  1. Which rooms are furthest from the road, pool and restaurant?
  2. Are there events or live music at the hotel or nearby?
  3. How many steps from reception to the room?
  4. Is there air conditioning, or fans only? (Windows open means more sound.)
  5. Is there construction nearby?

Nature noise is part of it

Howler monkeys can call before sunrise and rain on a metal roof is loud. Most visitors come to love it, but light sleepers might pack earplugs.
